How to Compare Contractor Estimates on Long Island

By The TruBuild Team

You did the smart thing and got three estimates. Now you are staring at three very different numbers with no clear way to tell which one is fair. Comparing contractor estimates is a skill, and once you know what to look for it gets a lot easier.

First, make sure you are comparing the same scope. The most common reason bids differ wildly is that each contractor priced a slightly different job. One included permits and cleanup, another did not. One specced mid-grade materials, another premium. Line the bids up item by item before you compare totals.

Second, be suspicious of the lowest number, not just the highest. A bid that comes in far below the others often means something is missing, whether it is materials, labor, or a realistic understanding of the job. That gap tends to reappear later as a change order.

Third, look at what is not on the page. How are change orders handled? What is the payment schedule? What is the timeline, and what happens if it slips? A slightly higher bid with clear terms and a solid contractor is usually cheaper than a low bid that goes sideways.

This side by side comparison is one of the most valuable things TruBuild does for Long Island homeowners, and it costs you nothing. We gather the estimates, normalize them to the same scope, and walk you through the real differences so you can choose with confidence. Book a free consult to get started.
